Nagoski\u2019s book, Quilliam argues, needs no editing, and is \u201cone of the best books ever written . . . for guiding women in particular through the minefield of their sexuality in today\u2019s world.\u201d\r\n\r\nEric Berkowitz\u2014journalist, author and lawyer and author of Sex and Punishment: 4,000 years of Judging Desire<\/em><\/a>\u2014talks about sex and society<\/a>.\u00a0 He chooses works of literature, including The Picture of Dorian Gray<\/em><\/a> by Oscar Wilde and To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em><\/a> by Harper Lee as well as history (Roman Sexualities<\/em><\/a>, <\/em>edited by Judith P Hallett and Marilyn B Skinner).\u00a0 His own book ends at the end of the 19th<\/sup> century, because if he\u2019d continued, he argued, the last chapter \u201cwould have been 450 pages long\u201d.\u00a0 Faramerz Dabhoiwala looks at the 18th<\/sup> century sexual revolution<\/a>.\u00a0 He chooses, amongst others, Clarissa<\/em><\/a> by Samuel Richardson and Letters to the Women of England<\/em><\/a> by Mary Robinson, arguing these books\u00a0illustrate the nature of that revolution and the extent to which women were relatively disadvantaged by it.\r\n\r\nJonathan Zimmerman, Professor of Education and History at New York University explores the minefield of sex education<\/a> and argues that any attempt to find a value-free way of teaching the subject \u201cis a fool\u2019s errand\u201d.\u00a0 Kate Figes talks about sex and marriage<\/a>; she also chooses Comfort's The Joy of Sex<\/em><\/a>. Her other choices include Married Love<\/em><\/a> by Marie Stopes and Anna Karenina<\/em><\/a> by Leo Tolstoy. Evan Zimroth, the poet and novelist, chooses her best books on adultery<\/a>. Fittingly, she breaks our rules and chooses six books.\r\n\r\nEdmund White chooses his best works of gay fiction<\/a>, including titles by Jean Genet<\/a>, Christopher Isherwood<\/a>, Alan Hollinghurst<\/a> and E M Forster<\/a>. Finally, to sex and sexuality in the animal kingdom as a whole: Tim Birkhead talks about sperm<\/a>, how testes size among primates correlates very closely with promiscuity in a given species and how hens can reject the sperm of inferior cockerels, amongst other fascinating insights.
